Wheels turning over Landlord Licensing
Wheels seem to be turning, one way or the other, over the landlord licensing issue. With reforms due in a Green Paper, expected within 10 days, and an ARLA report being announced today (May 5), the Residential Landlords Association was fearing that the “Rugg Review” of private rented sector housing was to be the latest to be swept under a carpet. The RLA has been urging a government response to the excellent report published last autumn by Dr. Julie Rugg and David Rhodes, which dispelled many of the myths surrounding the private rented sector which is an increasingly important provider of homes. It sounds as though ARLA is about to support the RLA’s belief in voluntary action as opposed to further legislation - but it’s the impending Green Paper, with its threat of mandatory regulations that could prove a major battleground for us all.
