Landlords alerted as one-third of tenants struggle with rent
Friday, December 23rd, 2011More than one in three private tenants are struggling to pay their rent, says a new report.
The study on housing, by British Social Attitudes produced for NatCen Social Research, says 35% of private tenants are having problems meeting their rent payments, compared with 29% of tenants in social housing.
The report also suggested that 32% of people think rents in the private sector are too high, regardless of their own tenure. Among social tenants, 43% consider private rents unaffordable.
The report’s author, Glen Bramley, professor of urban studies at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, said: “It appears that many who rent from councils and housing associations regard private renting as a housing alternative which is both unaffordable and insecure.”
