County court closures worry for landlords

Up and down the country, the Government is proposing to close County Courts. These are not just small rural courts: large towns will lose their local courts.

Landlords, uniquely, have to go to court to obtain possession.

It is not just the closure of these courts but the overall loss of staff, court offices and courtrooms which will result in longer waits before you obtain possession. In the interim, you will have to continue to provide your tenant with accommodation, whilst rent arrears may run up.

The Government is conducting a consultation on these proposed closures. For more information, go to the Ministry of Justice website by clicking here.

A list of the courts affected (as at 10th August 2010) can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The RLA has already voiced concerns to Government on behalf of landlords, which can be seen by clicking here. This response and others can also be found in the RLA’s Campaign Guide

The consultation is being run on an area by area basis. You can make your individual concerns known by going to the Ministry of Justice website and completing the questionnaire.

There is a parallel consultation on closing local magistrates’ courts, but generally this should not affect landlords. It is the reduction in county courts which is of concern. Please act now.
