Karen Buck, the MP who has tabled the Homes (Fitness) For Human Habitation Bill, has been confirmed as the latest speaker for our Future Renting conference in London this September.
Karen, who is also an MP for the constituency of Westminster North, will take part in a panel discussion session entitled ‘Tenants as Consumers- the way ahead?’ and will discuss what landlords can expect to see in the future. She will be taking part in the panel discussion alongside the Property Ombudsman, Katrine Sporle CBE.
The (Homes) Fitness for Human Habitation Bill
The Fitness for Human Habitation Bill would give tenants the power to take their landlord to court if their homes are deemed not fit for purpose at the start of, and throughout, their tenancy.
The RLA is supporting this Bill for several reasons, including that it extends to all housing tenures and that it provides an alternative route to enforcement. You can read more about why the RLA is supporting the Bill here.
When the Bill passed through to its next stage in January, Karen Buck publicly thanked the RLA for supporting the Bill.
As well as discussing her Bill, Karen will join a panel of experts including The Property Ombudsman, Katrine Sporle CBE, to discuss other issues such as the Tenants Fees Bill, with the Government announced today that the Report Stage for this Bill will be held on the 5th September. Landlord redress will also be discussed during the panel session.
Hosted by award winning LBC presenter Clive Bull, other speakers at the Future Renting will include Richard Tacagani of London Property Licensing who will be talking about what landlords need to know about licensing, and lawyer David Smith who will be discussing upcoming legislation changes.
