More than 200 landlords attended the RLA’s Future Renting Wales conference last week, the second to be held in Cardiff.

Hosted by BBC Wales broadcaster Lucy Owen, delegates heard from two Ministers on the day, Rebecca Evans AM, the Minister for Housing and Regeneration in Wales and Justin Tomlinson MP, the Minister for Family Support, Housing and Child Maintenance at the Department of Work and Pensions.

At the conference, Rebecca Evans AM delivered her keynote and revealed that landlords could be offered incentives and other support to house those in need, saying ‘poverty should not be allowed to be the basis for discrimination’.

In her speech, Rebecca also touched upon the Renting Homes Fees Bill, saying that she has resisted calls saying that penalties can not be charged until 14 days after the rent is due, and that she understands that many landlords also have mortgage payments to meet. On Rent Smart Wales, Rebecca told a packed conference hall that she believes the ‘majority’ of landlords are now registered with the scheme.

You can watch an interview with the Housing Minister filmed at the conference here, and watch other videos from the conference on our Youtube Channel here, including the keynote speech from Justin Tomlinson MP.

Delegates also heard from Justin Tomlinson MP at the conference. During his keynote speech, Mr Tomlinson said that Universal Credit is the ‘single biggest transformation to welfare in a generation’.

Mr Tomlinson went on to praise the RLA’s extensive campaigning work in the area of welfare, saying “The RLA are one of the most proactive and constructive trade bodies, and listen to your concerns. I know from meetings with the RLA that they are a very constructive voice for landlords.”

As well as hearing from two Ministers, delegates also heard all about how Brexit could impact their lettings, and practical tips on being a successful landlord from TV personality and founder of Landlord Action, Paul Shamplina.
