Scotland: Tenancy deposit scheme deadline approaching

The deadline for many deposits to be lodged in a tenancy deposit scheme is coming up soon. For most tenancies the key date is 13th November 2012.

Scottish members who require guidance on this matter can contact our partners at the Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL) by phone on 0131 564 0100, or by email to

There are three Government approved TDS providers in Scotland. The not-for-profit scheme SafeDeposits Scotland is the one backed by SAL and most other Scottish stakeholders. Their website has useful resources for landlords and letting agents plus full details of the deadlines and how to comply.

There are two other TDS schemes. Their details can be found on the Scottish Government website. Most English schemes are “insurance based” schemes (landlord keeps deposit money and pays a premium) and are not valid for Scottish tenancies.

All three Scottish schemes are “custodial” (ie deposit money is handed to a third party).

Please contact SAL via if you have any questions on scheme validity.
