Thangam Debbonaire MP has been appointed as the new Shadow Housing Secretary, as part of the Labour Party cabinet reshuffle, after Sir Kier Starmer was named the new leader of the party at the weekend.
Bristol West MP
Ms Debbonaire is the member of parliament for Bristol West, a seat she has held for five years.
Prior to taking up her new position as Shadow Housing Secretary, Ms Debbonaire has previously been a Shadow Brexit Minister and the opposition whip.
Views on housing and the private rented sector
On her website, Debbonaire names “decent homes for all”as being one of her priorities, with the site stating “since 2010 we’ve seen a steep drop in investment for new affordable homes, billions of pounds cut from housing benefit, inaction on short-term lets, soaring rents in the private rented sector, and significant cuts to funding for homelessness services…everyone has the right to a decent home.”
Thangam Debbonaire is a firm supporter of ending Section 21, having previously said:
“I support the campaign to end section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions. Evictions are a major cause of homelessness, which has increased dramatically in recent years. The government is failing to address the underlying causes of these crises. Strengthening tenants’ rights would be a step in the right direction.”
In March 2020 she called on the Government to “encourage the establishment of a private rented sector scheme for refugees, to recognise not just the general problems that most people might face when suddenly plunged into the private rented sector, but the specific barriers faced by refugees.”
