The Big Question: Should ‘to let’ boards be banned?

Camden Council is one of the latest in a long line of local authorities planning to ban all ‘to let’ boards from rented homes.

The council is following in the footsteps of those in Newcastle, Lincoln and Durham to impose the bans, which have been in place in some towns and cities, including historic areas of Brighton and Hove, for 10 years now.

Residents in some areas have complained they are an eyesore, with others saying boards being left up indeterminately – even after a property has been let.

A number of councils have now introduced fines for boards that are not removed within a fortnight of a property being let.

Mixed reception

Proposals nationwide have had a mixed reception from landlords. 

Some say to let boards are outdated anyway; ‘harking back to the days when putting a sign in a window was the only method of attracting tenants’ and say the internet has rendered them obsolete.

Others say it is just another example of ‘landlord-bashing’ and that to let signs are still an important tool when it comes to marketing a property.

  • Yes it’s happened in Leicester too. The City Council – a landlord itself – seems to be intent on creating an unlevel playing field against the PRS.

    However my understanding is that the Council’s diktat against “To Let” boards can not apply to a “To Let” poster on the INSIDE of a front window i.e. so that tehnically an interested passer-by is looking INTO the property and so is seeing something (the poster) which is within the property.
